Competion was arranged for our field at Doagh. Forecast was borderline and as we arrived there was still a sniff of rain in the air. Fortunately this rapidly cleared but threatened for the entirety of the comp. A first outing for Club Chairman, Bill Scott, mainly due to health reasons and he is grateful to Paul Freeman for picking him up.
Five fliers turned out and the event was set for the standard 8 min flights with a landing spot also in use. This proved to be troublesome as wiith the stiff breeze, it was very easy to lose all forward momentum making the upwind turn and this caught many people out. Bill suffered particularly badly, tip stalling on his second approach and splitting the fuselage of his Thermik Aggressor, just behind the wing. This put him oout for the rest of the event. He wasn’t the only one to suffer: only 9 andings from 22 flights undertaken made the spot!
Lift was fickle and not easy to find. Even going across to where someone was already in lift was no guarantee of also getting lift. Paul was flying to some ridiculous heights, particularly with the low cloudbase, with only Sam really getting with him. David was flying his latest creation with a PuRES fuz and an OD full house wing. He was having a few issues with stalling and will probably have to look at CG or incidence. Models flown were Aggressor, Purito’s, PuRES and Davids OD
A good event made more interesting as lift had to be found, worked and then manage to get the spot. In the inclement conditions this was far from easy.
