NIMSA was formed in the mid ’70’s to promote pure soaring disciplines in Northern Ireland. Since then technology has moved on, and the club now also promotes electric soaring models, where a small electric motor is used to gain height before being switched off and soaring flight begins. NIMSA is affiliated to the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) and members are required to join BMFA. This is mainly for insurance purposes. NIMSA is open to new members, but in line with current BMFA guidelines, under 18’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult, (either a parent or other responsible adult with written authorisation from the parents)
NIMSA flies thermal events at the City of Belfast Playing Fields, Mallusk. We hire this facility from the council and fly there with their permission. No other flying of any kind should take place there other than at NIMSA events. We also now have access to a field just outside Doagh, County Antrim for more general flying.
Slope soaring takes place throughout Northern Ireland
