Sunday 23rd April was scheduled for our first thermal event of 2023. With the footballers appearing to have deserted Mallusk, we decided to use the better flying site there. Forecast was borderline with some high wind gusts predicted and the possibility of rain.
CD Paul Freeman had 7 pilots and Club Chairman Bill Scott opted to act as scorer as he wasn’t feeling up to flying. Event was set as 5 rounds (1 discard) , 8 mins with a landing circle of 10m – shorter than last year. This was to prove quite a leveller as more than a few landed just short with the model stalling on the final turns.
In Rd 1, things were fairly even until Paul got away on his flight, creatiing a slight gap to the rest of the field. Rd 2 it was Sam doing the demolition with a time over double the next best. Rd 3 saw Keith do the same thing. Rd 4 saw Sam take the full points but with a couple of the others close behind. Rd 5 was much closer.

The 2m PuRES competition followed in a similar vein with some good air and some bad. With the wind direction forecast to be cross field, Paul had brough the shorter bungees, but it didn’t make a huge diference to the launch heights. Sams consistent flying gave him the win in this event.
